San Juan Island Whale Watching
Watch more than 85 magnificent Orca whales rise from the North Pacific’s Salish Sea, the inland marine waters surrounding the incredible San Juan Islands. Although these whales can be seen following salmon runs all year round, the most frequent sightings are from late April through late September. Many whales can be seen from shoreline parks or aboard a whale watch tour boat. Professionally–trained naturalists enhance this amazing whale watching adventure. Get close to and learn about these majestic creatures and the Islands' ecosystem include joining a wildlife search cruise or a sea kayaking adventure. Lime Kiln Point State Park, known as Whale Watch Park, is an excellent location to keep a lookout for whales. While the island's main attractions are the orca "killer" whales that reside in the San Juans, the Islands are alive with wildlife, marine life and more than 200 bird species. Take a cruise or a walk on the wild side and see Dall porpoise, harbor porpoise, harbor seal, Orca or minke whales, stellar sea lions, river otters, wild mink, kingfishers, and other species. Catch the bald eagles, osprey, hawks, and wild turkeys perch in island trees. Migratory birds, such as trumpeter swans, great blue heron, harlequin ducks, and Canada geese stay on island lakes and saltwater shores. Discover deer grazing in meadows, river otters bobbing along freshwater banks, and rabbit and red fox frolicking in the prairie. Discover the transient and indigenous species make the San Juan Islands one of the best wildlife viewing areas in the world!
